Rainy day in Stockholm

 May 17, 2025

This morning we walked to one of the many harbors for our scheduled private boat tour.  Unfortunately the weather wasn’t favorable but we did it anyway, got quite wet and still enjoyed it.  There are 30k islands in Stockholm and 270k in greater Sweden!

Next up was lunch- Swedish meatballs that were served with thin sweet pickles, mashed potatoes and lingonberries - I thought it odd but it all went well together and we washed it down with some mead.

We then went to the Vasa Museum which is completely designed around a very fancy ship with an exceedingly poor design that sank in 1628 just a few hundred feet after it was launched.  It was too narrow to accommodate the height and when a slight breeze came up, the ship listed and water poured in through all the open canon portals.  It sank very quickly and due to the very specific temperature & salinity conditions, it was amazingly preserved.  98% of the ship is original and made from oak for the most part.

  1. That is so cool that you went to that museum. I saw a piece on CBS Sunday Morning News (a favorite of mine every weekend) and it looked so interesting. I think they noted that they customized the climate in the museum to help preserve the ship but that over time, it will decay or something. Nonetheless, very neat post. Thanks!
