This morning we took the train to Versailles getting there well ahead of our “timed entry”. First, we had to wait outside the gates enclosing the grounds for a long time due to a strike and then finally were admitted to the courtyard. Once inside the gates, we had the pleasure of standing in another line. We thought the lines of timed entries at other sites were long, but this one was massive. I would guess it was close to 1,000 people. Even the “groups” had to wait in line with us which is unusual. Normally the groups are given special entrance.
The level of opulence is over the top of course. I’ll post just a few snaps.

| Louis XIV -the Sun King- who built this chateau. Charming, isn’t he? |
I really wanted to see Le Hameau de la Reine - a little village that Marie Antoinette created to get away from the craziness of the palace. It didn’t disappoint and such a nice reprieve from the opulence.

Close to 20,000 steps later we went to our favorite local restaurant for veggie pizza and collapsed at home.
Wow! Gorgeous pictures. I like to imagine myself there, in the place that you are standing, looking at what your camera is capturing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great sounding day. And nice way to close out a month in Paris.
ReplyDeleteWow! Thanks for sharing. For the record I could see Ed’s resemblance to his cousin Henry. Put glasses on Henry—twins!
ReplyDeleteI think I am going to do a day trip to Versailles when I am there next month. Too bad they don't have the fountains on all the time any more...
